Wahroonga ("our home"): The First Garden Suburb in Australia

  • Water Street is relatively narrow without kerbs and has the feel of a ‘country lane’.

This house was built in 1897 for Mr Arthur Graham Saddington, Clerk of the Court/Sydney and many of the mature trees were planted during his time.
  • In the 1898 Telephone Directory, the name of the house was given as “Karua”.
  • The second owner of the property was George Crane, of Watson and Crane Plumbing Supplies.
  • The present owners have carried out major upgrading and extensions on the house.
  • This beautiful established garden has remained remarkably unchanged since its inception.

This gracious home was built in 1905. Professor and Mrs Inglis were one of the early owners.
  • Mrs Inglis’ sister, Mrs Nosworthy, who was an architect, was engaged to change the rear of the house. In 1959, Dr and Mrs Carroll bought the house and engaged the architect, John Suttor.
  • He added the French windows, at the front of the house and a bathroom and dressing room off the front bedroom. Another major renovation was carried out in about 1995.
  • The front garden’s circular lawn and curved path has remained unchanged since the house was built.
  • The Landscape Designer, Peter Fudge modified the original garden during the changes to the house in 1995.

One of the grandest estates on the upper north shore sold last week, and while the agents would not comment on the price, it's understood to be about $6.1 million - the same amount the property last traded for in 2002.
  • Owned by the chairman of the CH Warman Group, Vivian King, and his wife, Wendy, the Wahroonga residence was listed with $8 million price hopes last October through Don MacLennan of Richardson & Wrench Lindfield and Tracey McDonald of Chadwick Real Estate.
  • But the agents revised the price guide to more than $6 million during last month's marketing campaign.
  • On a 3268-square-metre block in Water Street, with a 37-metre street frontage and magnificent gardens designed by two leading landscapers, Peter Fudge and Gordon Sykes, the circa-1905 Federation mansion has five bedrooms, a billiard room and multiple living and dining areas that open on to deep verandahs and terraces.

Threat: Inappropriate re-development and loss of heritage values

Significance:


  • The house is a fine example of a large Federation Queen Anne house, largely intact, set within a grand and beautifully landscaped garden.
  • The gardens retain considerable aesthetic significance illustrating intact features of Federation garden architecture and landscape design such as croquet lawn and grotto, summerhouse, glass house and wire trellises.
  • The grounds retain much of their original layout with sweeping paths and driveways providing the setting for the recreational features.
  • The grounds also featured a large vegetable garden, an orchard and a fowl run illustrating the desire for a degree of self-sufficiency by the early owners

The Site, especially the gardens, is under threat of redevelopment, with an inappropriate number of new buildings proposed in the grounds, which would disrupt the already reduced curtilage of the original building.
